For Silent Reading Fluency

BrainLinking, Incorporated is pleased to introduce the Reading Plus® program into Utah. Based on 75 years of reading experience and research, this unique, computerized program is a dynamic approach to the development of Silent Reading Fluency.

We can ascertain how individuals read orally by asking them to read aloud. However, a typical standardized test must be read silently. So, how do we assess Silent Reading Fluency?

boy-readingVISAGRAPH™ EYE-MOVEMENT TECHNOLOGY quickly evaluates reading ability

State of the art technology in funky little computerized goggles! As BrainLinking has evolved and expanded our program one of several invaluable tools has been the Visagraph™ Eye-Movement Recording System. The assessment takes ten to fifteen minutes during which time a student reads a selection on his independent reading level while wearing sensor containing goggles that record his ocular motor performance. Performance characteristics such as fixations (eye-stops), regressions, eye-pauses, reading rate, comprehension and visual/functional conditions (binocular coordination, tracking accuracy, etc.) are analyzed. From this information we can definitively and objectively evaluate a student’s visual/functional, perceptual and information processing efficiency. In other words, a student’s fundamental reading process can be assessed, allowing us to get a clear understanding of the client’s needs and challenges in reading.

The Visagraph™ assessment results are compared with National Norms established by S. Taylor in cooperation with 37 universities, evaluating 12,000 students. The National Reading Panel cited these norms as standard measures and stated that “research on the eye in the past two decades has provided a perspective from which to observe the silent reading process. These studies take a picture of how the eye moves and what it fixates on during reading.”

Reading Plus® provides TARGETED INSTRUCTION in five critical elements defined by the National Reading Panel

  1. Phonics
  2. Vocabulary acquisition
  3. Comprehension enhancement
  4. Phonemic awareness
  5. Fluency in silent reading *

* Fluency building is what makes Reading Plus® unique and successful !! *

Reading Plus® exercises specifically develop the fundamental reading process (visual/functional, perceptual and information processing skills) and provide extensive silent reading training.

Reading Plus® prepares students of all ages and levels with essential skills they need for academic and vocational success.

Reading Plus® Silent Reading Fluency programs develop:

  • accuracy in visual tracking,
  • instant word recognition,
  • rapid word association,
  • visual memory
  • good comprehension with ease and comfort in reading.

Remediation and Developmental Program

Reading Plus® is typically used two to three times per week in 30 to 45 minutechildren training sessions. BrainLinking offers a 4 month series (40 or more lessons) in our lab and through the internet in your own home. Progress is monitored and managed by a trainer to optimize every student’s efforts throughout the entire series.

There are physiological components of reading that the best teacher in the world can’t teach: binocular coordination and fusion (ability to use both eyes together), tracking across lines of print, sweeping from the right edge of the print to the beginning of the next line on the left, etc. Our children must be able to read and comprehend during silent reading just as they will be asked to do on the standardized tests. They must first be trained to read silently with fluency and with efficiency and then practice with guidance and feedback.

Improve reading process at any age

Reading Plus® is a unique, computerized reading program for all students who want to develop higher levels of reading competency.Women
It includes:

  • Activities for levels one through twelve as well as for college-age individuals.
  • Appropriate content for primary grade students as
well as more mature content for older students.

The efficiency of a student’s fundamental reading process will directly affect a student’s literal understanding. This, in turn, will impinge on higher level cognitive processing as well as how a student scores on standardized reading tests.

Complimentary groups of programs in Reading Plus® improve:

  1. Fluency
  2. Decoding (word attack)
  3. Vocabulary and comprehension skill

Reading Plus® decoding and vocabulary activities provide students with the “word unlocking” skills needed to recognize unfamiliar words, provide analytical meaning completion activities, and offer vocabulary enhancement lessons using context clues strategies. These programs produce rapid and intuitive decoding skills, analytical study skills and an enriched vocabulary.

Reading Plus® comprehension programs help students to develop study skill strategies, accelerated reading and global understanding with varied content. They develop more complete mastery of twenty-five major comprehension skills, refine study skill strategies and help students to become flexible in reading at accelerated rates.

Average improvement of 1.8 grade levels as measured by standardized tests

Our promise: During the 4 month course, the student will experience a

  • Minimum improvement of 1.5 to 2 levels of reading
  • 20-40 word per minute gain with comprehension of 70-100%.

Most clients are experiencing far greater growth than the minimum! We have several adults and youth already using this program. Without exception, they love it and the results they see after the first couple of weeks!

Reading Plus® provides training in:

      Attention and concentration
      Visual functioning
      Perceptual skills

Computerized training techniques are the only direct and effective means of developing and improving these subliminal processes

These skills involve over fifteen high speed visual and perceptual processes that interact from three to five times per second as the reader’s eyes move along lines of print. Since these processes are subliminal, they cannot be directed by a teacher nor controlled by a student. Only the manner of computerized fluency training involved in the guided reading program, a key component of Reading Plus®, can develop or retrain the high speed visual, perceptual and information processing skills a student employs in reading.

The silent reading fluency skills developed by Reading Plus® improve short term memory, literal understanding and the rate at which students can read comfortably with excellent comprehension.

The basic process encompasses the visual/functional, perceptual and information skills that initiate all forms of reading. High levels of fluency in silent reading are essential if reading is to become a more comfortable, enjoyable, rapid comprehension process. If students cannot perceive words accurately in a fraction of the usual eye-pause time, they will inadvertently make multiple eyes-stops to recognize each word. This delayed word recognition encourages visual wandering that reduces comprehension.

75 years of research

Reading Plus® is based on over 75 years of research that support its various instructional programs as well as studies that demonstrate its effectiveness.

Over 500,000 students have benefited from Reading Plus®

boychildren

Presently there are more than 100 sites, ranging from primary grades to college and adult education, which are willing to share their successful experiences with Reading Plus®. A list of these testimonial schools can be found on the Reading Plus® website (www.readingplus.com).

Reading Plus® is presently in use in over 3,500 schools throughout the U.S. and abroad, involving an estimated 350,000 students in over 100,000 classrooms and labs. The Visagraph eye-movement recording system is presently being used by over 1800 schools, clinics and vision specialists.
